Devon Dale is a twenty something Vancouverite. When she isn’t being a lady adventurer for hire she is at Venus & Mars selling you corsets, kilts and other steampunkery. She enjoys hula hooping, reading and yoga. When you see her in the store, mention the Doctor and she will squeal like a delighted child.
Sometimes I wonder if there is an alternate Venus&Mars and when the planets align just right the doorway to another dimension and an almost identical Venus
Why do I wonder this? Because occasionally someone will come in looking for something very specific that they are certain they saw in the shop but to the best of my knowledge the item never existed.
BIZZARO VM is the only reasonable explanation for it.
This strange and Twilight Zoney occurrence happened just earlier this year. Lisa from the Chop Shop Hair Salon came in looking for a ladies vest with tails that she had seen here. It was ideal for her because she would be able to cut hair with ease while looking quite dapper.
If you’re living in Vancouver, you’ve probably been basking in the glorious heat wave we’ve had this May. It’s nearly Summer now and while we love patio drinks, us pale goth kids are getting concerned once again about what we can wear in the blazing heat.
Fear not, children of the night, I have a solution for you.
Let me introduce you to the circle square skirt. It comes in both a long and short variation.
The lightweight fabric is breezy and comfortable in like, you know, a dark and mysterious sort of way. The kerchief hem is just the right amount of Morticia Addams without being too costumey. You can wear it with a corset or a tank top and it still looks awesome.
Best of all they’re a little bit like the jeans in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants: they fit everyone. The elastic wait means they’re as comfortable as yoga pants (not that I own yoga pants…) and that your skirt will fit your size 12 booty and your bestie’s size 6 booty.
So do not hide in the depth of basement all summer long fellow gothlings, get your butt down to 324 West Hastings and grab yourself a circle square skirt.
How do you alter your goth clothing to beat the heat? Let us know in the comments below.
Two awesome things just collided to bring you the most epic cosplay ever.
First, Sanne just made a batch a beautiful shiny new WAIST CINCHERS. They have heavy duty steel boning on the sides and flexible steel boning on the front and back so that you can bend and move while it holds your lovely shape nicely.
They have elastic lacing in the back so that if you take a big breath or eat a large meal the cincher expands with you and then contracts back to its original shape. Passing out just isn’t that fun or sexy.
They are reversible. One side is a black pinstripe velvet and the other is a beautiful bright purple.
Purple brings me to the second awesome thing.
We were blown away with one of our favorite Living Mannequins, Jenna’s (#yayjenna) cosplay of Lumpy Space Princess from Adventure Time at Fan Expo this year.
Drawing inspiration from the new WAIST CINCHER and with Jenna’s help we created an awesome Venus & Mars version of LSP.
Check out Jenna and the WAIST CINCHER in the video below:

VICKY WALKS! QUEEN VICTORIA DAY VENUS & MARS ONLINE FASHION SHOW
Welcome to the future nerdlings!
Here at Venus & Mars we really dig Victoria Day. The weather is gorgeous, the birds are chirping and it’s just a fabulous time to wear a corset.
This year we decided to have a fashion show in good old Vicky’s honour.
Typical fashion shows are rad but we decided to one up it and premier our Vicky Walks on Google Hangouts so the idea was that you can watch from your bed in your pjs while eating an entire tub of ice cream. Because it’s 2014 and the future is now!
It didn’t quite go according to plan…
