Featured Product: Kilt Pin Skirts

Every once in a while someone will ask me: What is your favourite thing in the store?

How could I begin to answer that? I love cloaks because I feel like they transport me to a fantasy adventure whenever I put one on. I love corsets because I become a sexy femme fatal when I lace one up. And I love kilts because really is there anything sexier than a man in a kilt? How could I possibly choose just one thing as a favourite?

If you rephrase that question and ask what I have gotten the most wear out of then hands down, no contest, the answer is the kilt pin skirt. Seriously, I have half a dozen different colours of kilt pin skirts and I love them so much. You may be wondering how I keep my outfits so fresh and interesting if I just keep buying multiples of the same item. Fear not, I have some suggestions to give your kilt pin skirt some different looks.

kilt pin skirtKilt Pin Skirt + Nerdy Graphic Tee = Match Made in Heaven

My absolutely favourite thing to wear with my kilt pin skirt is a nerdy tee shirt, some stripey tights and doc marten boots. It looks super cute together and lets you show your personality. As an added bonus, your nerdy shirt can act as a filter to decide who you want to talk to. In other words, if you know what “the angels have the phone box” means or why bowties are cool then we’ll probably have lots to talk about.

Kilt Pin Skirt + Corset = Awesome Sexy Power Outfit

If I’m going out somewhere fancy and I want to step up my game then I will go for a kilt pin skirt with a corset. I love the sophistication of the corset with the flirty kilt pin skirt. You can feel sassy and stylish without being too exposed. If you really want to step up your game add some fishnet stockings and a pair of boots!

So if you haven’t tried one of our underbust holster vests then you should get your butt down here and try one on. They are amazing and awesome and you will love it. Do you know what goes great with one? A Kilt Pin Skirt! The kilt pin skirt is basic enough that it will let a cool piece like the underbust holster vest shine. If you want to kick it up add some cool gloves and a choker.

Back to Cool (How to Express your Individuality with a Dress Code)

Going back to school can be a bummer. Luckily there is a shining beacon of hope: Back to School Shopping! You can get awesome, new, fabulous outfits that lets you express your individuality. Sometimes navigating school dress codes can be tricky. Don’t worry, I have your back and I have come up with some different levels of outfits to test the boundaries of your school’s dress code.

Level One:

Try a purple plaid kilt skirt with a purple velvet tank, a lace up crop and a black pocket belt for a super sassy back to school look. There is nothing more luxurious than wearing velvet. When you’re stuck at your desk, watching the minutes tick by you can feel like royalty. The lace up crop shrug lets you hide your bra straps (if that is an issue at your school) while still being a little risque and sexy with the lace up in the front. The pocket belt lets you carry all your important things like your wallet, keys, phone, pens and pencils so you can carry your books. Bonus, you don’t have to worry about lugging around a backpack!

Level Two:

If you managed to sneak past the authorities in the first outfit then you can crank up the intensity with a kilt pin skirt, Queen Anne Corsetlet, and black velvet shrug. The kilt pin skirt is longer in the back so you don’t have to worry about it being too short to wear at school. The Queen Anne Corsetlet has the look of a corset with the laceup front. The velvet shrug will hide any bra straps and cover the shoulders.

Level Three:

If you’re feeling daring then you should try a peasant blouse with a waist cincher, vest and a kilt pin skirt. The peasant blouse will cover up enough for school. The waist cincher might not be dress code but since it’s an under the bust it does not give the same oomph that a corset. It might just sneak under the radar. If you do get in trouble, just button up the vest and problem solved.

Where Do I Wear This?

where do i wear this?

One of our most frequently asked question is “where do you wear this?”. It’s a question that comes in many forms.  Some people ask “who wears this stuff” and others ask “how would you describe what you’re selling”. The bottom line is that we do not carry what H&M carries and it confuses people. I think what they are really trying to ask is “Is there a market for alternative clothing?”.  And the answer is hell yes.

Where Do I Wear This?

lace up crop shrugI wear Venus & Mars stuff everyday.  I know that I may seem like the exception because I work at the shop but it’s actually really easy to integrate pieces into your wardrobe without looking super goth. For example the sleeves crop, shrugs, lace-up hoodie or lace up crop shrug are all really well crafted, handmade, quality pieces of clothing that can be worn anywhere. Throw your crop sleeves over a tank top with some jeans and you’re ready to walk your dog at the park. Add a shrug to a tank top or a tube top and you can easily hide your bra straps for work or school. The lace-up hoodie with any top and jeans or a skirt is an awesome outfit to wear to coffee.  Add a lace-up crop shrug to a body con dress and you’ve taken your look from basic to a little be edgy (on a side note, I’m totally rocking that outfit at the time of writing this). So the short answer is that we have quality pieces that can be worn everyday in any situation.

We do also provide many pieces to the film industry. Supernatural, Van Helsing, Once Upon a Time and Arrow are just a few shows currently using some of our products.  We also have a great selection of pieces that you could mix and match for costumes. Vampires, Steampunk, and Victorian costumes are our speciality. Many cosplayers also find items to complete costumes here such as fangs, ears, horns and contacts. In the past few years, we have seen an increase in people shopping for festival wear or Burning Man attire.  Many of the products we make have function in mind so you can find all kinds of things with pockets like harness, holsters and belts.

Who Wears This Stuff

As I mentioned previous we get a lot of festival goers, cosplayers and people from the film industry but steampunk gentlemanwe also get brides, grooms and grads. Wait, what? Really?  You may be thinking, but it’s true! We have been in business for 24 years.  In the past our main focus was gowns for bridal, grad and formal events.  Although our collection has expanded to include a lot more separates, we are still one of Vancouver’s top choices for alternative formal wear. We still have a decent selection of gowns but we now offer other options such as corsets, skirts, Queen Anne Corsetlets and more as an alternative.  We also have one of Vancouver’s largest alternative clothing selection for men.  Which means, guys, that you do not have to get married or graduate in a tux if you don’t want to.  We have kilts, military frock coats, vests and poet shirts that you could rock instead.

How Would You Describe What You’re Selling

I would describe what we sell as beautiful, quality, handmade clothing. But I also think that we fit into the category of Goth, Steampunk, Victorian, Cosplay and Festival Fashion. The truth is that like many people, we’re not just one thing. We are many things and different people put us into different categories. Some of the items we carry are integratable into any wardrobe for any occasion.  Other items are more appropriate for formal events. And other items work best for costumes. At the end of the day, you get to decide what you want to wear, how you want to wear it and whether or not you’re comfortable.  So rock a cape at the library if it makes you happy or wear a gown to your Victorian Lit class. There are no rules. We have something for everyone for any event.

Gothic High Tea and Vicky Walks

Happy Victoria Day! I hope that you got the day off and that you’re relaxing on a patio in the sun somewhere. We will be open for our holidays hours (11am – 5pm) so if you’re in the area you should drop by and say hello.  If you’re not in the area then you should plan to come visit anyways! There’s lots of great patios in Gastown waiting for you to come enjoy a fruity beverage on after you’ve gone shopping for a new corset outfit. You could make a day of it.

Victoria Day always makes me think of the Gothic High Tea.  For years, we hosted a mini fashion show with tea and goodies. Unfortunately, the store started to get too busy to host the Gothic High Tea anymore. It can get a bit chaotic when you have models running around, people shop and snacks all in the same space.

We missed doing the fashion show though so a few years ago we decided to do a virtual fashion show with living mannequins, Jenna and Dan.  It was great. We also tried to stream it but it was long before the days of Periscope, Facebook Live and Instagram Live so we failed miserably. But if you look hard enough you can find our commentary while we were trying to stream. Guess what! I have the virtual fashion show available and ready for you to watch.  subscribe to our YouTube channel so you never miss a virtual fashion show again!

What are you up to this Victoria Day? Let us know in the comments below.

4 Easy Steps to Convince your Boss to have Tutu Tuesdays

50's crinolines

Working in an office sucks when you’re not a muggle.  You have to come and go according to someone else’s schedule.  You have to sit at a computer without browsing the internet.  You have to make small talk with people who have no idea that you are secretly a weirdo.  Worst of all, you have to wear stupid, ugly office clothes. The annual Christmas party gives you a little bit of a break from the monotony but that’s only once a year.  What you need is Tutu Tuesday.  Here’s some tips to help convince your boss that Tutu Tuesday is what your office needs.

  1. Do it for Charity.

Find a pretty politically neutral charity like the food bank or the SPCA.  Go to your boss and propose that everyone could donate $5 per week to participate in tutu Tuesday.  Your boss can feel good about the company giving back to the community and the people in your office can feel good and donating to a good cause. And you can feel good about wearing a tutu.

  2. Do it as a morale booster.

In my office experience, people can get fall into a slump at work especially when the workload is overwhelming or the coffee machine is broken.  When one person gets down, they drag the whole office down with them.  The cheapest and easy fix to changing the mood of the office is by adding tutus.  It’s pretty hard to take yourself or any problems too seriously when you’re wearing a tutu.  Copier is broken again?  That’s sucks, I’m just gonna grand jete out of stage left and it’s no longer my problem.  (Grand jete is a ballet term for big jump.  I did research).

  3. Remind your boss that tutus can still look professional.

This may seem crazy but it’s true.  For example if you wore your tutu with a peasant blouse and vest you would look more professional than someone in yoga pants, flip flops and a loose shirt.  I’ve seen people wear yoga pants in professional settings.  You will never be able to convince me that looks better than a tutu. NEVER.

  4. Clients will love it.

Here’s the truth, when you have new clients, it’s sometimes hard to find common ground to talk about.  Making small talk about the weather and traffic can only go so far.  Want to really make an impression and have your company stand out in the client’s memory, get them to come for a meeting on Tutu Tuesday.  There is no way they’ll forget about your company then.

Feeling nervous about talking to your boss face to face, why not share this post with them on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter?  Or if you want to get them indirectly, sign your boss up for the for Steampunk Tempest.
