Venus & Mars Summer Re-Cap

Holy smokes, the summer of 2017 has been so busy! I swear I only closed my eyes for a second and all of a sudden we were at the end of August. How did that happen? I guess to figure that out we have to think way back to the end of spring.

June

I don’t know why but this year has been the year of the steampunk wedding.  We got to help so many awesome couples steampunk their outfits for their unique celebrations. From costume party dinner cruises to three day long festival themed wedding extravaganzas, we got to sprinkle a little Venus & Mars fairy dust on some very rad people.  Thanks for letting us be a part of your day!

Towards the end of June, we also got to vend at East Side Pride for the first time ever. It was a super busy day full of excellent drag performances and musical numbers. We saw a couple familiar faces and met some new friends.

July

July was all about Bass Coast. We had silver things and galaxy leggings and leg wraps as far as the eye could see for the space theme this year. It was super fun to dress people up in sci fi futuristic outfits.

In mid July, we returned to Vancouver Folk Festival to vend after a five year hiatus. I can’t for the life of me figure out why we waited so long to go back! The music was awesome and the people were super friendly. I got a little bit sunburned on my face but all in all it was totally worth it to go back.

August

August so far is all Burning Man and Oregon Eclipse. We seen a lot of familiar faces for Burning Man but we’ve also had a ton of people who are new to the Burn and new to Venus & Mars. Goggles, Pocket Belts, Boots, Cloaks and Tutus have been flying off the racks.

We also lost our minds and did three events this month.  Two of those events were on the same weekend. We started the month with Anime Revolution (shout out to all our cosplay friends) and then we did the Pride Festival on Sunset Beach. Just this weekend Sanne went to Langley and worked at Arts Alive.

Looking back, it’s no wonder our summer flew by. We got to do so many cool events and make new friends in the shop.

You NEED Goggles to save your Eyes!

Listen, this is not a test, Burning Man is just around the corner and we are going to sell out of goggles. Every year the same thing happens, people come and shop in July and scope out the goggles they want but they hold off buying them. They wait to the last possible minute and try to grab a pair. More often than not the unthinkable happens and we are sold out of basically everything. Price shopping is a good idea. Check out online stores and shops in Vancouver.  Make the best possible choice, but be organised and make sure that you have protection for your eyes. They’re really hard to replace.

Here are my top three suggestions for Burning Man goggles (guess what they’re all under $50):

Retro Joe - Smoke
Retro Joe Goggles

Retro Joes are shatterproof.  They have poly carbonate lenses with a UV 300 filter for maximum protection so that your peepers will be able to keep peeping. They are available in smoke, yellow or clear lenses.  We generally recommend yellow lenses because they are dark enough to protect you from the glare of the sun but light enough that you can still wear them at night. As an added bonus, the frames are fold-able which makes them super easy to pack and store. Win.

Big Ben Goggles

Listen up my fellow bespectacled friends, Big Ben goggles fit over most styles of glasses. You don’t have to choose between being able to see or protecting your eyes.  You can have it both ways! Not only do Big Bens fit over glasses they also have an anti fog coating so you don’t have to worry about condensation blocking your view of the Playa! Like the Retro Joes, Big Bens are available with clear lenses, yellow lenses or smoke lenses.

Machinist Goggles

Machinist Goggles will protect your eyes from dust but they do not seal as well as Big Bens or Retro Joes.  What they lack in function they make up for in style.  These are probably our most popular pair of goggles. The bronze and brown tones give the goggles a definite steampunk style.  The metal brackets dial that steampunk style up to eleven. They have padding around the eyes which make them super comfortable to wear for long periods of time either on your face or on your head. The green lenses makes it easy to transition from daytime to nighttime without impairing your vision.

Anime Revolution and Pride in the Same Weekend!?

This year Anime Revolution and Pride are taking place on the same weekend. They are two of our favourite events to vend at so we were having a crazy difficult time trying to figure out which event to go to. We tried weighing all the pros and cons, we tried to think of which event was more fun, and we even tried to flip a coin. In the end we decided that there was no possible way to choose and we decided to do both! It may sound crazy but this weekend you’ll be able to catch us at Anime Revolution on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and we will also be at Sunset Beach for Pride on Sunday.

Anime Revolution

Anime Revolution is a three day event taking place at the Vancouver Convention Center. Prepare yourself for a gathering of Vancouver’s most creative cosplayers and showcase your cosplay to like-minded fans! Whether you’re a cosplayer, or simply curious about the anime culture, you will find stunning cosplays that will either induce nostalgia, or bring out the inner fan in you! Don’t shy away and come experience the enjoyment of cosplay!

Pride

Pride is a one day, free event taking place at Sunset Beach. Over 150,000 Pride partiers take in the Festival and Market, which is a great place to be before, after, and even during the Parade. Browse through 100 + booths at the market to buy some pride souvenirs or view local artisans work, or you can learn more about local non-profits and other exhibitors. There is a 19 + beer garden available with a DJ for this popular event. Live music on the main stage. Bring your family to the family zone for some kid friendly events.

Are you planning on coming out to Anime Revolution or Pride?  How about both? Let us know all about it in the comments below.

Three MORE Things you NEED at a Festival

Okay listen up kids, a few weeks ago we discussed Three Things You Need at a Festival. Well, I’ve been thinking and I’m pretty sure I missed a couple of keys things in that list so here we go, Three More Things You Need at a Festival.

Proper Footwear

Riot 12 - Black 12 Hole Buckle BootsYou will probably be spending the majority of the festival on your feet. If you want to dance the night away you should really think about investing in a proper pair of boots. Flip flops, sandals or bare feet may seem like a more appropriate choice but you do run the risk of rolling your ankles and it can be hard on your joints if you don’t have proper support. If you’re barefoot you are putting your poor feet at the mercy of everything that may be on the ground. I know I sound less like Devon Dale: Lady Adventurer for Hire and more like Devon Dale: Crazy Over Cautious Grandmother but really think about it. You will not have as much fun if you are in pain.

Eye Protection

goggles manYou only have one set of eyes and you need to take care of them.  They are totally not replaceable… yet. If you are headed to the playa you most definitely need a pair of goggles with a proper seal and UV protection. The dust gets everywhere and you need to do what you can to keep it out of your peepers. But even if you’re not heading to Burning man you need to protect your eyes. I had to Google it but did you know that the sun can cause Cataracts? I sure didn’t. Geeze, I thought that sunglasses were just really cute accessories that made things less bright. They serve a purpose. If you are going to be outside in the sun, you need to get something to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Sunglasses or goggles are an excellent place to start.

Comfortable Clothing that Keep You Cool

Long Purple Circle Square SkirtListen you’re out there dancing and having a good time. You’re going to look super fly. Is it still cool to say super fly? You need clothing that won’t restrict your awesome dance moves but that will still keep you covered enough to avoid sun burns in unfortunate places. Guys, may I suggest a kilt? You can move and dance while looking rad but you’ll get the full effect of the breeze. Ladies, our circle square skirts and side lace skirts are stretchy and made of cotton so you’ll be able to look cool and feel cool. What more could you ask for?

Have I missed anything in my list?  What do you think are the most important things to have at a festival? Let us know in the comments below.

Featured Product: Holsters!

How can you be an urban super hero when you have to worry about where to put your purse? How can you dance like no one’s watching when you have to keep an eye on your backpack? You can’t, plain and simple. We have previously talk about the awesomeness that is the pocket belt but what if you’re just not a pocket belt type of person.  Don’t worry, we have an alternative. Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of holsters.

Holsters, like pocket belts, let you carry your valuables (like snacks) on you as part of your outfit. Except instead of sitting on your hips, you wear a holster more like a vest. We have several different styles available that let you stylishly add pockets to any outfit.

goggles manBlack Cotton Canvas Reversible Holster Vest

Reversible alert! This holster vest can be worn two ways.  That’s right, you get two looks for the price of one. The reversible holster vest is what happens when elf meets steampunk.  The front of the holster vest looks like a vest but the back is lace up.  It is an excellent choice for hot summer months.  On the black canvass side you get two zippered pockets and two patch pockets and on the reverse you get an additional two pockets. That gives you a total of six pockets for all your things. It looks great with a skinny tee and kilt or a tank top and side lace skirt.

Underbust Holster Vest with Detachable Hoodsunderbust holster

Full disclosure, this is my favourite holster.  I remember when Sanne made the sample and I was just like, I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE. This is the ultimate piece of clothing to own if you are a Lord of the Rings fan, a D&D nerd, a Harry Potter fan or you just love fantasy. It’s perfect for festivals or steampunk cosplay. This holster fits under the bust and creates a similar silhouette to a waist cincher without all that pesky boning. There are two deep pockets big enough to hold your phone, wallet and gummy bears. And the best part is there is a giant hood. But wait, that’s not all, the hood is detachable and it comes with an extra piece so you can wear the hood on its own. Awesome! It looks great with corset and kilt pin skirt but it also looks super dapper with a poet shirt and bondage pants.

holster harnessBlack Cotton Canvas Holster Harness

This is easily our most popular holster and it’s easy to see why. First of all you get the practicality of a reversible holster with two zipper pockets and two patch pockets. But you also get the aesthetic of harness. The pockets sit nicely at your sides while two adjustable straps do up in front. Your phone, keys and wallet will be safe and you will look sexy. I totally have one of these. They’re rad. Try one with a kilt.  That’s it. Nothing else.

holster 3Reversible Black Holster

I have two of these. I bought one and my husband liked it so much that I ended up getting one for him too. They are perfect when I am vending at an event.  My husband likes to wear his when he is bartending. There are two zippered pockets on the black canvass side and two patch pockets on the reverse side. From the front it looks like a normal black vest which makes it super easy to integrate into your everyday wardrobe. The back is straps so it keeps you cool if you are working. High five for not over heating. They look great with a skinny tee, actually they look great with everything.

Leg Holster1(Bonus) Thigh Holster

Okay so if you don’t want to wear a pocket belt and you’re worried a holster will ruin your outfit then I have just the thing for you.  The Thigh Holster is so discrete that no one will notice you wearing it.  There is just one deep zipper pocket but it’s big enough to hold your phone, some cash or cards and your keys. The sticky elastic allows you wear it on your thigh without it slipping down. You can easily cover it with a dress, kilt or skirt. As an added bonus you will feel totally badass and sexy whenever you have to hike up with your dress to pay for something.
