Holy smokes, Vancouver Folk Festival is less than a week away.  We are so excited to be participating in the 40th Annual Vancouver Folk Festival again after a five year hiatus.  Sanne has been super busy making all kinds of new things and restocking sold out things.  What kind of things?  How about lace up crop shrugs, spirit hoods and  steampunk bustle pocket belts to name a few. We will also have an abundance of other awesome festival gear including underbust holsters, kilts, cloaks, pocket belts and much much more.

Fresh New Handmade: Steampunk Bustle Pocket Belt

Pocket Belts are awesome.  They let you carry your things without having to worry about a purse or bag. Steampunk is awesome. It’s probably my favorite style of costume because it’s so open ended and the only limitation is your imagination. Do you see where I’m going with this? If you like steampunk and pocket belts I have the most excellent accessory for you in the history of the world. We mashed up pocket belts and steampunk and made the Steampunk Bustle Pocket Belt.

steampunk bustle pocket belt - sideLet me explain why these new Steampunk Bustle Pocket Belts are so great. First, they are made from canvas. They’re super durable so they’ll hold up in a dust storm at Burning Man or a frenzied run through the airport. They have a large a flap pocket with velcro closure, an outer side pocket and two inner secret pocket. Think of all the things you can carry! The waist strap is adjustable and secured by a clip closure.  The best part is that there is a lace bustle on the back. You can make any outfit steampunk!

They look great on men and women.  You could totally rock a Steampunk Bustle Pocket Belt in your everyday life with a pair of jeans and t-shirt. Or you could wear one with your best festival gear to become a steampunk elf warrior. We suggest trying one with a Queen Anne Corsetlet and short circle square skirt. Or you could try one with a skinny tee  and  bondage pants.

Join Me on the Corner of Fashion and Function: Festival Pocket Belt

I grew up in Mission. Every August there was a big folk music festival in Heritage Park. Everyone would go. My drama class would fund raise by running the parking and as an added bonus we got to get into the festival for free.  There were dozens of booths selling all kinds of interesting trinkets or musical instruments or clothing.  There was a large stage where bands from all over the world would play while the hippie parents danced on the grass in front of it. Most importantly, there were food vendors with every kind of fried dough and lemonade imaginable. The food was the best part.

The worst part was trying to figure out how to carry your things.  Backpacks were pretty good but in the middle of August they make your back super sweaty.  Plus if you wanted to dance you had to find someone to watch your bag or dance off in the corner where you wouldn’t hit anyone.  Purses were okay but once you crammed your new goodies in there the strap would start to dig into your shoulder. Also if you were dancing, you couldn’t flail about because you might spill the contents of your purse.

If I decided to go back this summer I would definitely invest in a Venus & Mars handmade Festival Pocket Belt.

First of all these pocket belts are super cute. They are currently available in black and teal (one of the best colour combos ever). There is a long tail like piece of fabric that comes down like a cape for your butt or your hip. It has four pockets so you can keep all your curiosities on you as well as your snacks and wallet.  There is a large zipper pocket for things that need to be secure. It also a flap pocket with a button detail.  There are two more open pockets in case you need easy access to M&Ms or gummy bears. The waist strap is adjustable and has a double velcro closure. It’s pretty much the definition of fashion meets function. If you are planning on going to a festival this summer, I strongly suggest coming to Venus & Mars to try one on.  It might be exactly what you need to keep your things and your sanity intact.

Go Stealth Goth with the New Lace-Up Crop Top

stealth goth - lace up crop top

Guys, I have a new favourite thing from Venus & Mars. Seriously, I had to get one before they were even tagged and out for sale.  And I have been wearing it non-stop since I got it. Are you ready for this life changing accessory?  It’s the fresh new handmade lace-up crop top.

laceup crop shrug- fullIf you’ve ever stopped by the shop in the past decade or so you’ve probably seen Sanne wearing something very similar to the new crop top. This spring she went to the Dominican and accidentally left it there so she was forced to make herself a new one.  Luckily for all of us she made some extras so we can all look fabulous.

This crop top has cap sleeves. You can totally use it to hide your bra straps with a tank top, tube top or corset. And it is perfect for hiding that little bit of armpit fat that everyone has. The lace up front is super sexy but also adjustable so it looks great regardless of whether you have big boobs or little boobs. Also this crop goes with everything.

The best part is if you work in an office you can totally be stealth goth at work. As a former office drone, I used to hate having to dress business casual at work. I felt like I was wearing the most boring cosplay ever playing Monday – Friday 9-5. Fun little accessories like the lace up crop top was the only thing that kept me going.

Check out our video of Sanne unveiling the new crop top (after I give her a lipstick tutorial).
