I grew up in Mission. Every August there was a big folk music festival in Heritage Park. Everyone would go. My drama class would fund raise by running the parking and as an added bonus we got to get into the festival for free. There were dozens of booths selling all kinds of interesting trinkets or musical instruments or clothing. There was a large stage where bands from all over the world would play while the hippie parents danced on the grass in front of it. Most importantly, there were food vendors with every kind of fried dough and lemonade imaginable. The food was the best part.
The worst part was trying to figure out how to carry your things. Backpacks were pretty good but in the middle of August they make your back super sweaty. Plus if you wanted to dance you had to find someone to watch your bag or dance off in the corner where you wouldn’t hit anyone. Purses were okay but once you crammed your new goodies in there the strap would start to dig into your shoulder. Also if you were dancing, you couldn’t flail about because you might spill the contents of your purse.
If I decided to go back this summer I would definitely invest in a Venus & Mars handmade Festival Pocket Belt.
First of all these pocket belts are super cute. They are currently available in black and teal (one of the best colour combos ever). There is a long tail like piece of fabric that comes down like a cape for your butt or your hip. It has four pockets so you can keep all your curiosities on you as well as your snacks and wallet. There is a large zipper pocket for things that need to be secure. It also a flap pocket with a button detail. There are two more open pockets in case you need easy access to M&Ms or gummy bears. The waist strap is adjustable and has a double velcro closure. It’s pretty much the definition of fashion meets function. If you are planning on going to a festival this summer, I strongly suggest coming to Venus & Mars to try one on. It might be exactly what you need to keep your things and your sanity intact.

Problem: Summer is here and it’s hot. Solution: KILTS.
Seriously, kilts are amazing. They look great with everything, they’re super manly (and sexy) and when there’s a breeze they’re your own personal air conditioner. Luckily for you we have a variety of styles and colours of kilts. Bonus they’re designed by Sanne and made right here in Vancouver. What more could you ask for? Still need convincing? Here are my top three reasons why kilts are the BEST.
KILTS are manlier/ sexier than motor oil and beards. Just ask the Spartans and the Scots. I mean think about it. Chances are the last man you saw in a kilt was either decked out in traditional gear (hot!) or he was a bearded man with 20 hole boots and lots of tattoos (hotter!). It takes a certain amount of confidence to go against social norms. When you see a guy in a kilt you know that he is secure with himself. What could be sexier than that?
KILTS keep you cooler than shorts. If you live in Vancouver you’ve been enjoying this sunny weather since mid May. And you know that it will only get hotter as the summer progresses. Shorts are great and all but kilts have the advantage. All you need is a little breeze and then BOOM you have your own personal AC on your lower half.
KILTS go with everything. Got a wedding? Wear a kilt. Going to a festival? Kilt. Gotta grab some groceries? Kilt. Kilts look great with a t-shirt and a pair of converse runners for a casual look. Wear a plaid shirt and hiking boots with your kilt if you’re camping. If you have a formal affair try a kilt with a poet shirt, vest and some boots. Kilts are super handy for fetish events. Just add a skinny tee and guy liner and you’re ready to go.
Well there you have it. If you’re still not convinced that Kilts are amazing then you have no choice but to head down to the store and try a couple on.

What if I told you that we had a magical unisex piece of clothing that had pockets and that you wouldn’t over heat in? What if that item was also perfect for cosplay, steampunk outfits, music festivals and Burning Man? I bet your ears would perk right up and you would want to know more. Well hold onto your hats, kids, because we have just restocked our reversible holster vest. And it is that magical piece of clothing you are wishing for.
First of all, the reversible holster vest has pockets. You can keep your phone, ID and cash close you without worrying about ruining your looks with a backpack or leaving your purse somewhere.
Secondly, it’s reversible. I know that the name implies that but it’s still important to mention. You are getting two looks for the price of one. One side is black cotton canvas which will go with everything you own and the other side is green tapestry with a feature fabric at the pocket. Some have black pockets, some have pinstripe pockets and some have faux fur pockets. So essentially you have one side that lets you match it with just about anything and the other side makes the holster vest a feature in your outfit. How cool is that?
Third, the back is lace up. That means that the size is a little bit adjustable and that you will be able to feel the cool breeze on your back. How great is that? Not only is the lace up functional but it also adds a sexy detail to the back. Sounds pretty rad to me.
But Devon, what exactly do I wear with a reversible holster vest? The short answer is pretty much anything you want. Seriously, try one with a jeans and t-shirt! It’ll look great. If you want to go a little more steampunk though try one with a side lace skirt, corset, and goggles.

Last week we had two days of sunshine and it was warm enough to walk around without a jacket. Do you know what that means? It’s time to start to build your festival wardrobe for the summer months ahead. Whether you’re one of the lucky ones who get to go down to Burning Man or whether you’re staying closer to home and attending Bass Coast, Shambhala or Vancouver Folk Festival, you’re going to need clothes to stand out in the crowd and we have just the things you need.
Obviously you’ll need the basics like a good pocket belt, reliable goggles and solid boots but what about brain storage unit? You absolutely must remember to have something to cover your head. It may sound silly but keeping the sun off your neck and shoulders will save you from discomfort later. Hats and hoods are also handy in the evening when it starts to cool down. Plus if it starts to rain you can stay dry!
Luckily for you, we have just finished making a fresh, new batch of spirit hoods! They are just perfect for festival season. A Spirit Hood will protect your mind’s home from the elements and as an added bonus they are super cute. They have faux fur on the outside and are lined with left over fabric which means they are Eco friendly and help to reduce waste. There is a built in scarf with secret pockets (for snacks) that end in adorkable paw mittens. They also have cute rounded bear like ears on the hood so you will be the most cuddly person at the party.
Not sure what is appropriate attire to wear with a spirit hood? May we suggest a short circle square skirt, tube top and shrug? Or how about a kilt and holster vest ? Honestly Spirit Hoods look great with everything. You should probably come get one right now and just wear it with whatever you have on.
What’s in your tickle trunk this festival season? Let us know about it in the comments below.

It’s that magical time between evening and night. The light has dimmed but it is not yet dark yet. The hot, humid summer day has become pleasantly warm with an occasional cool breeze. She steps barefoot out into a clearing in the thick West Coast woods. Her asymmetrical skirt swishes by her feet. She reaches into the pocket of her holster vest and pulls out an apple. Content to be alone, she takes a bite and listens to the forest sing. Out of nowhere, she feels a drop of water on her bare arms. Then she feels another. A summer rain has started. Undeterred, she gently lifts her hood on to her head, finishes her apple and then disappears into the trees.
Attention all the elves, fairies, steampunks, adventurers and Burners, we have something you will most definitely want to come check out. If there were two things that you could add to your clothing what would those things be? Most likely you answered, pockets and a hood. What if I were to tell you that there is a locally handmade garment available to you that provides both those thing? Well, guess what! There is and we have it.
Forget diamonds, the underbust holster vest is a girl’s best friend. The underbust holster is so flattering. It zips up in the front under your boobs which creates a slimmer looking waist similar to waist cincher. Unlike a cincher, there is no boning so you are free to run and move and twist. Its perfect for dancing the night away or scaling a building before you zip line down across the city to steal the world’s largest Ruby from an evil doer trying to build a death ray. You know just typical girly stuff. The pockets are fairly big. You could definitely fit your phone or a small wallet in there. They are also great for storing trail mix for when you need a little snack.
Guess what else? There is a hood and it’s detachable so you can wear it with the holster or on it’s own. The hoods are huge. It doesn’t matter how big you make your hair, this hood will still fit over your head.
Want to know what to wear with an underbust holster vest? Our mannequin is rocking a purple chiffon underblouse, wiggle skirt, lace choker and goggles.
Well what are you waiting for? Why haven’t you added an underbust holster to your cart yet? Is it because you’re driving down to 324 Hastings Street to try one on? Because that is the only acceptable excuse.
