Venus & Mars Summer Re-Cap

Holy smokes, the summer of 2017 has been so busy! I swear I only closed my eyes for a second and all of a sudden we were at the end of August. How did that happen? I guess to figure that out we have to think way back to the end of spring.

I don’t know why but this year has been the year of the steampunk wedding.  We got to help so many awesome couples steampunk their outfits for their unique celebrations. From costume party dinner cruises to three day long festival themed wedding extravaganzas, we got to sprinkle a little Venus & Mars fairy dust on some very rad people.  Thanks for letting us be a part of your day!

Towards the end of June, we also got to vend at East Side Pride for the first time ever. It was a super busy day full of excellent drag performances and musical numbers. We saw a couple familiar faces and met some new friends.

July was all about Bass Coast. We had silver things and galaxy leggings and leg wraps as far as the eye could see for the space theme this year. It was super fun to dress people up in sci fi futuristic outfits.

In mid July, we returned to Vancouver Folk Festival to vend after a five year hiatus. I can’t for the life of me figure out why we waited so long to go back! The music was awesome and the people were super friendly. I got a little bit sunburned on my face but all in all it was totally worth it to go back.

August so far is all Burning Man and Oregon Eclipse. We seen a lot of familiar faces for Burning Man but we’ve also had a ton of people who are new to the Burn and new to Venus & Mars. Goggles, Pocket Belts, Boots, Cloaks and Tutus have been flying off the racks.

We also lost our minds and did three events this month.  Two of those events were on the same weekend. We started the month with Anime Revolution (shout out to all our cosplay friends) and then we did the Pride Festival on Sunset Beach. Just this weekend Sanne went to Langley and worked at Arts Alive.

Looking back, it’s no wonder our summer flew by. We got to do so many cool events and make new friends in the shop.

East Side Pride is less than a Week Away!

Holy smokes, East Side Pride is less than a week away.  We are so excited to be participating in East Side Pride for the first time ever.  Sanne has been super busy making all kinds of new things and restocking sold out things.  What kind of things?  How about lace up crop shrugs, festival hoods and  cloaks to name a few. We will also have an abundance of awesome rainbow things from rams horns to leg wraps and booty shorts.

East Side Pride is a one day event. It will take place Saturday June 24 from 11am to 6pm at Grandview Park. Guess what! This event is free to attend. How rad is that? Kick off the Pride Season at the site of the historic Stonewall Festival! East Side Pride offers a chance to take in the work of local artisans and learn more about community groups doing important work in and with the LGBTQ2+ community in Vancouver. Look forward to acoustic performances by local bands and serenades by some of the East Side’s top drag performers.

Are you planning on coming out to East Side Pride?  Let us know all about it in the comments below.

New Fresh Handmade: Multi Points Pocket Belt

Wine Multi Points Pocket Belt

Introducing our New Fresh Handmade Multi Points Pocket Belt.

Multi Points Pocket Belt

Ladies, do you ever wish you had more places to put things? Purses are great but when you have serious butt to kick and names to take, purses tend to become a burden. Where are you supposed to to put your bag when the opportunity to be awesome arises?

Gentlemen, do you ever feel like your wallet and keys and phone are just too bulky for the pockets of jeans designed for mere mortals? I’m pretty sure Zeus doesn’t need to worry about stuffing his wallet into his back pocket every time he taps in or out at the skytrain.

Ninjas, do ever run out of places to hide smoke bombs and throwing stars?

Don’t you just wish there was a stylish, handmade solution that you could buy from a friendly, local, alternative shop?

Luckily for you, I have a solution.  Hot from the oven of inspiration, we have baked a delicious multipoint pocket belt to hold all of your important things.

Available in black, wine and multi colour there is a pocket belt for every outfit. They look great with a corset and skirt or a kilt and a skinny tee. You can even wear them with jeans and a t shirt. Or you could just wear the belt on its own! We won’t judge.

They are available in 2 sizes but the Velcro waist allows for maximum adjustability. They have patch pockets on the inside for your secret things, zipper pockets for your secure things and Velcro pockets for snacks. There are so many pockets you’ll start looking for extra things to carry.

Get one for your next musical festival or just for everyday. Turn yours into a steampunk tool belt. Wear it to Burning Man. Make it part of your cosplay. The options are limitless!

What’s your solution for carry things around? Let us know in the comments below!

Holy Cats, its Festival Time!

Happy BC Day, Pride & Festival!

Holy Cats, its Festival Time!

These past couple of weeks have been filled with Bass Coasters, Shambalaers, and Burners at the shop. Everyone is searching for pieces to complete their wild and awesome outfits.

This month, VM will be EVERYWHERE . We are starting out at Pride on Sunset beach and we’re wrapping up the month at the convention centre for Anime Revolution.

Do not fear, my festival friends, the shop will continue to be open during all of our running around. You will not miss out on last minute goggles , contacts or hair dye.

August also brings BC day so here are some random facts to consider while you go camping on the long weekend:

The Spirit Bear is our provincial mammal;
The Dogwood is our provincial flower;
The Steller’s Jay is our provincial bird;
Jade is our provincial gemstone;
The Western Red Cedar is our provincial tree; and
The Pacific Salmon is our provincial fish – it was officially added in February, 2013

The more you know… and knowing is half the battle.

September will be here before you know it. Do you have an event coming up that you would like Venus & Mars to be a vendor at? Let us know about it in the comments below.

Want everyone to know our totally not boring BC facts? Why not share this on Facebook or Twitter? Use the links below.

Time to go drink some BC beer to celebrate!

Gay Bride Day! A Pride #ThrowBackThursday

Gay Bride Day! A Pride #ThrowBackThursday…

The following is an article that first appeared in The Georgia Straight on July 29, 1999 to celebrate Pride. The gowns featured are designed by Sanné Lambert (that’s me) for Venus&Mars Clothing. 1999 was the year the world was supposed to end. I think it was something to do with the computers not being able to reset themselves and therefor we were all supposed to explode. It was a big deal at the time. Apparently so was gay marriage. I’m glad we’re able to take these things for granted now…
