If you’re a fan of the store or a regular customer, you may have noticed that we’ve been closed for all of January. You may have received an email or read a blog stating that we had to be closed for the first two weeks of January. If you’re astoot, you may also have noticed that it’s been longer than two weeks.
Why isn’t the store open?
We would really like to be open. We miss you guys. Here’s the thing, sometimes when you’re renovating new and exciting problems pop up out of nowhere. That’s exactly what happened to us. I won’t get too into it but the issues involved water leaking and that’s something that you most definitely can’t ignore. I mean what’s the point of renovations if we had to close again a few months later to fix more stuff. You can’t just trade falling in a pit for you having to swim to the till.
When will we be open again?
Here’s the good news. Since the new and exciting problems have been dealt with, it looks like we will be open again before the end of January. Thank goodness. You can shop for a killing outfit just in time for Taboo. And more importantly, we will be open and ready to help you find the perfect Valentine’s Day outfit or gift.
Where else can you find us?
Speaking of Taboo, we will be vending again this year. Click here to get all the details. We will also be vending at Fan Expo again in 2019 which is coming up in March. Click here to learn all about that. We will be at East Pride and Pride again this. We’re also hoping to come back to Commercial Drive Car Free Day. That’s all we have planned so far but we’re open to suggestions. If there’s somewhere you would like to see us, please let us know onFacebook, Instagram and Twitter .
Thanks so much for baring with us during the epic renovations of our floors. We’re looking forward to seeing all of your lovely faces again soon.
The Epic Tale of Our Floor
(TL:DR We have to be closed for the first 2 weeks of January for renovations. CLICK HERE to get an email to notify you when we’re open again.)
If you’ve been the shop recently, you may have felt a little off centered. Maybe if felt as if the world was tilted. Or you may have even possibly felt a little spring in your step like you were walking on a trampoline. There is a very good reason for that. Our floor is slowly failing and we have no choice but to fix it before someone falls into the center of the earth.
What is Happening
One morning I was sweeping behind the trunk where we keep our extra corsets and I noticed that some of the tiles on the floor were cracked. I showed Sanné and we decided to keep an eye on it. It wasn’t clear whether they were cracked from the floor failing or whether something had fallen on the floor. We made sure that nothing heavy was resting there and let the landlords know. Cut to a week later and cracks were starting to show up all over the place. We reinforced things as best as we could but in the end we had no choice but to temporarily close so that we can guarantee that no one will end up in Wonderland if they step in the wrong spot.
How long will we be closed?
Here’s the thing with renovations, it’s hard to know exactly how long it will take to repair. The contractor has estimated that it will take a week or two but, as anyone who has ever redone their kitchen knows, it’s only an estimate. We’re hoping that it will be closer to a week and as soon as we can be open again we will be. We will be keeping you updated on our progress via email, the website and social media so keep your eyes peeled.
Where can you get your VM fix?
If you are stressing out and wondering how you could possibly survive without Venus & Mars in your life, don’t worry. The website will still be up and running. You can shop online 24/7 while we’re closed. In fact, we’ll even give you 15% off if you use the discount code RENO. We will also be updating our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter daily with awesome outfit ideas.
It can be really stressful closing for two weeks and for some small businesses it can be the kiss of death. That’s why we are so grateful to have the most AWESOME customers in the world. Having your support for the past 25 years alleviates a lot of that stress and let’s us know that everything will be okay. Thank you so much for being you. We can’t wait to see you in 2019! Have a safe and happy holiday.
We’re officially 3 weeks away from Christmas. By now the tree is decorated, the lights are up and you might be starting to freak out about last minute Christmas gifts. It’s okay, deep breaths, we are here to help you figure it out. So sit down, grab some eggnog and sugar cookies because we have our top three unisex gift ideas for under $50. To make things even easier, these are all available online as well as in store so you can shop however you’d like.
Give your loved ones the gift of not having to carry a purse or backpack. Pocket Belts let you carry your valuables (keys, phone, wallet, ID) securely without inhibiting your mobility. They are also super stylish and go with any outfit. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who likes to travel, go to festivals or busy parents.
Got a friend with a wild side? Do they remind you of viking or amazon? Then a faux fur wrist wallet might be the way to go. Faux Fur Wrist Wallets are made of super soft pettable faux fur and are available in white, grey and tan. They lace up which makes the size adjustable. Their small, zippered pocket is just big enough to hold ID, cash and a couple of keys. Perfect for going out dancing! Get it for your friend in the fetish community, ravers, or just people who don’t like to carry stuff.
We all have that one friend who is impossible to shop for. Their tastes are too eccentric to anticipate what they need or want. Or maybe you have a friend that’s got a huge tickle trunk and you just have no idea what’s in there. For those hard to shop for friends, we suggest a gift card. Let them pick out something they really want or need. If you feel like a GC is too impersonal then make it an event. Pick a day and make up an itinerary. Go for lunch at Meat and Bread, followed by shopping at Venus & Mars and end the day with a treat from Pure Bread. What could be more fun than spending an afternoon eating yummy food and shopping at cool stores?
What is Cosplay?
Fan Expo is three sleeps away! I’m so excited to see all the amazing and creative cosplay. In honour of Fan Expo, I thought I’d re-post I blog I wrote explaining what cosplay is for those who are not initiated! Enjoy and don’t forget to drop by and say hello to us this weekend!
Cosplay is actually a portmanteau of two words: costume and play. Originally, I think that the word specifically applied to anime culture where people would dress up as their favourite anime characters. As time has gone by, it has expanded to include pretty much any pop culture icon. Some people are purists and get every detail perfect right down to the colour of the thread on the switching. Some people mash up differently cultural elements to create a new version of a character like making a steampunk sailor moon or a little mermaid princess Leia. Lots of people make gender bending version of their favourite characters like a male Harley Quinn or a female Captain America. The options are limitless and the community is super accepting.
If you are still not sure you understand, fear not! I have some examples of awesome Venus & Mars versions of some of our most favourite fictional badass ladies.
Wonder Woman is one of my personal favourite super heroes so naturally we had to include her. It’s so empowering to have a strong, fearless female hero kicking ass and taking names. Who wouldn’t want to dress up like that? For Wonder Woman we combined the iconic Linda Carter look with some of the badassery of the new Gal Gadot look. We put together a gold Venus & Mars bandeau with a red reversible VM waist cincher some blue booty shorts, a black velvet cloak and gold pointe glovettes. Suffering Sappho, I have never seen a cooler Wonder Woman!
If you have ever been to a convention you know that if we had to include anything it was Harley Quinn. There has been so many Harley looks over years and we couldn’t pick just one. We used her original black and red for inspiration but gave the overall outfit more of a roller derby feel. For this outfit, we combined a sleeveless red skinny tee, the reverse side of the reversible red waist cincher, black and red tap shorts and mix and matched a pair of red and black fishnet glovettes. We also added a pair of black goggles as a nod to the original Harley Quinn’s black eye mask. Trust me, puddin’, everyone will love this Harley look.
We love Carrie Fisher. Her real life sassy no bullshit approach to Hollywood is something we can all aspire to. We absolutely had to pay homage to her with a Princess Leia inspired look. I know slave Leia is super popular but we wanted to show off the all white princess outfit instead. We put together a white under blouse, white reversible waist cincher and cream panne cloak. And we used a white pinstripe tube top as the skirt. To really sell the look we put Ivette’s hair into buns. I sense great awesome in this outfit. (PS. I love this picture so much. I think it’s one of my favourites ever.)
So what did you think of my definition of cosplay? did I get it right? Would you explain it differently? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Halloween Costume Ideas for People Who Don’t Dress Up
Halloween is my favorite time of year. I love pumpkins, candy and most of all dressing up! There’s nothing better than putting together a costume and wearing crazy makeup and wigs. But I know that not everyone feels this way. Halloween can be a stressful time of year for people who aren’t into costume. Don’t worry. I’m here to help if you have a costume party to go and you hate dressing up.
Keep it Simple
Listen, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to come up with a costume. In fact, you probably have something in your wardrobe that you can at least use as a base for your costume. Do you have a jeans and a plaid shirt? Then you have the base of a lumberjack or hipster costume. Add some suspenders and a toy axe, voila you’re a lumberjack. Swap the axe for glasses without lenses and you’re a hipster. Got a black dress? You’ve got the base for a witch costume. Add a black witch hat and maybe some striped socks, voila witch.
Be a Time Traveler
Time Traveler is my favorite easy costume. Can you borrow items from your parents or grandparents? Great! You’ve got the base for your time traveler costume. The best part about being a time traveler is that you don’t really need a cohesive costume. You can wear your everyday jeans with an 80s shirt and some 70s glasses and it works because you’re a time traveler. In fact, the more disjointed your items are the better it works! If you really want to sell if you can add a bunch of watches. If you want to be a little more creative take a steampunk angle by adding goggles and a pocket belt.

When in Doubt, Get a Cloak
Okay, so you have nothing in your wardrobe and you hate the idea of being a time traveler. Don’t worry, I have a solution for you. Just get a cloak. I’m serious. A cloak is the easiest way to look like you’re in costume without having to dress up. You’ll be able to get into any party. You’ll be the requirement of dressing up for your office.
I hope this helps you warm up to the idea of dressing up for Halloween and takes the pressure of coming up with a costume. At the end of the day, it’s about having fun. Give costumes a try, you never know, you might like it.
