Featured Product: The Waist Cincher!

Venus& Mars Valentines Window

Picture this: A beautiful hotel room with 1,500 count Egyptian Cotton sheets, a bottle of champagne and a tasteful scattering of rose petals.  Sounds romantic, doesn’t it?  Soft music is playing in the background.  A beautiful person is standing in front of you in sexy black leather pants and nothing else.  What are you wearing?  If you’re answer is I don’t know, yoga pants or ummmm then it’s time I tell you about the Venus&Mars waist cincher.

Let’s start with the basics.  The Venus & Mars waist cincher is steel boned and reversible (that means you get 2 for 1). It has elastic lacing at the back that will expand with you when you gasp and contract back when you sigh. It holds you close like a good lover but lets you move and bend into every position possible. I dare you to find a piece of clothing that makes you feel this sexy and comfortable at the same time.

For an evening in, I would suggest you wear one with a garter belt, stockings, boots and nothing else.  If you want to cover your arms, add a pair of sleeves.  If you’re feeling a little shy add some pasties or a sparkly bra. But if you’re aim is for sexy time then less is more.  Now you maybe wondering, why bother wearing anything at all?  Here’s the truth.  Some of us don’t feel 100% confident in our beautiful bodies all the time. Most of us, have issues with our tummies.  Wearing a waist cincher is like wearing armour.  It allows you to cover the part you don’t like and highlight the parts you do like. Sexiness comes from confidence. If you’re more confident having your tummy covered, then cover your tummy and you’ll feel sexier.  You can always take off later if you’re feeling up to it.

Unlike lingerie from a department store you’ll be able to wear waist cincher outside of the bedroom too.  They work great under clothing if you want to feel sexy without anyone known and look a little slimmer in your office wear. If you’re heading out for an evening on the town, waist cinchers look great over a little black dress or a blouse or even over a band t-shirt with a plaid skirt and some fishnets.

Waist cinchers are also really hand if you’re into cosplay.  They can help shape your body to match the crazy waspy waists from the pages of comic books. Got a steampunk party?  Put your cincher over a white button up shirt, add a pair of black pants (or come get a circle square skirt), a pocket belt and some goggles and voila, you’ve got a steampunk outfit.

Whatever you choose to do with it, a Venus & Mars Waist Cincher is the perfect addition to your wardrobe this Valentine’s Day.  What are you waiting for, add one to your cart or get down to shop to try one on right now!

3 STYLES TO TRY WITH YOUR NEW CORSET

3 STYLES TO TRY WITH YOUR NEW CORSET

Last week we talked about the most frequent question we get asked when it comes to wearing a corset, which is of course, How do I tie this by myself? So this week I thought we could tackle the second most frequent question we get asked about corsets: Is this only for the bedroom?

The answer is Heck No!

You can totally integrate a corset into your daily wear. Step it up when you go out to the bar or club and try wearing your corset with a pair of skinny jeans and heels.  If you want extra coverage add a shrug or sleeves.  If you work at an office without a strict dress code try wearing a corset over a blouse with a pair of dress pants or a pencil skirt.  If you’re feeling a little shy add a blazer.  Alternatively, you can wear your corset under that dress that you have that is a fraction too small to make it fit.  Come to think of it, you can wear a corset under  just about anything if you want a little bit more of an hourglass shape or you want to be undercover sexy.

See how easy it is?  Now let me suggest three styles for you to try with your new corset if you want to take one giant step outside of your comfort zone. I’ll be using the same corset in all three looks.

Steampunk Corset Outfit

1. Steampunk

Okay so you must have know that was coming.  I love steampunk so much.  There is so much room for creativity and I really feel like it is one of those genres that you can dip your toe into by wearing goggles and carrying a pocket watch or plunge head first into the deep end by creating a steam-powered car and living the fantasy 24/7. To create a steampunk look with your corset try wearing it over a peasant blouse, add a rail pull skirt, some striped stockings and a pair of boots.  If you really want to blow people away thrown on a pocket belt, a top hat, some goggles and of course a pocket watch.

Goth Corset Outfit2. Goth

I was a preteen in the nineties.  Grunge and the movie Clueless has probably had more influence on my style than anything else but my ultimate 90s fashion dream is the Romantic Goth.  Is there anything more gorgeous than the drama of white makeup with deep red lips and smokey black eye?  I don’t think so.  If you want to goth or vamp up your corset look try a black velvet a-line skirt with some black velvet sleeves add in black fishnets and some stompy boots to be the ultimate queen of darkness. Don’t forget to add a black velvet cloak and maybe a lace choker to hide the vampire bites.

Cosply Corset Outfit3. Cosplay

Okay so I know cosplay is super open ended and that what you wear will totally depend on the character you are dressing up as but corsets are great for helping you achieve the (sometimes unrealistic) shape of your favorite character.  They can also work as a focal piece in your ensemble especially if you are interpreting the outfit in a way that differs from the source material.  For example, if I was dressing up as everyone’s favorite DC bad girl Harley Quinn I would wear my corset with a pair of red gloves, throw on a black and red crinoline, add a black and red pair of jester tights and top it off with a pair of black boots. To really make it over the top I would use some white foundation with really red lips, put on a black mask and throw my hair in pigtails.

Throw Back Thursday Venus&Mars’ First Taboo

Venus&Mars at Taboo

Chances are you have probably seen us around at a local convention, festival or event.  Whether we’re helping you with your cosplay at Fan Expo or Anime Revolution or selling you a sparkly bra at Pride, if it’s a large gathering of cool people in Vancouver you’ll find us there. We’ve hung out with you on Jericho Beach at Vancouver Folk Festival and huddled under a tent to keep out of the rain with you at Celtic Fest, but have you ever wondered what our first ever really big event was?

In 2011 we attended our first Taboo.  We had done a couple other small events but now we were ready to play in the big leagues at our first ever event at the Vancouver Convention Centre.  Our setup was way different 6 years ago compared to now but our vision was clear. We were going to set up a pop up shop that would have the same feel as the Venus&Mars brick and mortar, only smaller.  We brought rolling racks full of Venus&Mars corsets, cinchers, vests and cloaks to have on display.  There was only one problem.  We had no idea how to display it.

A few days before the event Sanne bought some grid wall.  This was going to be fantastic.  We could construct a freestanding store with displays.  That’s when we ran into our second problem.  We didn’t know how to put the grid wall together.  Sanne’s husband had bought some clips from the hardware store and after a lot of fussing around with them, one of our neighbours was kind enough to point out that it was much easier to use zap straps.   Now we always have an abundance of zap straps with us for every event. I’m sure we would have figured it out eventually but it was nice of her to help speed up the process.

Today, we have set up down to an art.  We plan out our layout ahead of time so we can get our booth up and ready for action as quickly as possible (although sometimes if you come early you might catch us frushing our displays).

We are so excited to attend our seventh Taboo this year (February 3-5, 2017).  Will you be there?  What would you like us to bring?  Let us know in the comments below!  Do you need an awesome sexy outfit to wear?  Why not look through our online shop to get some ideas or come down to the shop and let us dress you up?

Don’t forget to like us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter to get the scoop on what we’re doing.  If you haven’t signed up for the newsletter already you’d better do that too in order to get super secret deals.

Thanks!

3 items to complete your steampunk look

pocketwatches

Picture this: it’s twilight in Gastown.  The corner of Water street and Cambie is empty. It’s so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Suddenly you hear the whirls of the steam clock and the familiar chime follows. You hear the sounds of footsteps and through the steam you see a corseted girl in impossibly tall boots and goggles running towards you.

“I have no time to explain,” she says, “ I’m from another dimension and the world is depending on you for survival.  Follow me!”

She grabs your hand and starts pulling you down the street when suddenly she turns and says “oops wrong person. You don’t look prepared for what I need.” Then she drops your hand and runs off.

Has this ever happened to you?

Here are 3 pieces you need to to complete your steampunk look and make sure it never happens again!

Goggles

Goggles are essential to looking the part of steampunk.  In a world powered by steam you will need to protect your eyes. Goggles are perfect for that. Additionally, you can wear them as a headband to keep your hair out of your face and they double as a stylish accessory if you wear them around you neck. The ones we sell are also UV 400 so you can use them as sunglasses. Bonus.

Pocket Belt

As a steampunk you have gadgets. We’re guessing lots of them. On top of that you have your phone, wallet and keys to worry about. Backpacks are great but when you’re jumping through dimensions or traveling in tim3 items to complete your steampunk look or fighting airship pirates, your bag probably isn’t your top priority and you might end up leaving it somewhere. Why not just carry all your things on you instead?  Available in a variety of styles and colours.

Pocket Watch(es) (available in shop only at this time)

Time travel and steampunk goes together like peanut butter and jelly. Therefor you will need at least one pocket watch to keep track of when you are. The more watches you have the more times you can keep track of. Guess what, you can keep them on your pocket belt!

Pair these items with a button down shirt and pants or a corset and skirt or even leggings and an oversized shirt and you are on your way to have a kick ass steampunk outfit.

What adventures will you go on in your steampunk outfit?  Let us know in the comments below!
