FAQ: What is Steampunk?

what is steampunk

This has been the summer of the steampunk wedding here at Venus & Mars.  We’ve had so many awesome couples looking for outfits or accessories to steampunk their wedding.  We’ve also had a lot of wedding guest looking for ensembles and answers.  So many people want to know, what exactly is steampunk?

I have some good news and bad news. The bad news is that I’m not sure there is a totally definitive answer to that question.  Some people know it involves goggles and gears.  Other people is say it’s when goths wear brown. I like to think of it as a sci fi fantasy world where steam is the main power source.  Basically think Jules Vern, H.G. Wells, time travel, Victorian Fashion and goggles. Do you know what the good news is? If there’s no definitive answer to what steampunk is then you are only limited by your imagination.

Do you know what else is awesome about Steampunk? It’s so inclusive.  You could wear brown pants, a white dress shirt, suspenders, and GOGGLES and be steampunk. Or you can go all out and build your own steam powered motorcycle, convert your keyboard into a typewriter and dress Victorian 24/7.  It’s all good in the steampunk hood and you can participate in whatever capacity you choose.

what is steampunkStill not convinced steampunk is amazing? Listen to this, you can create a character with your wardrobe. Are you an adventurer finding new lands and exploring unknown kingdoms?  Then you probably want to wear something easy to move in like a pair of black cotton bondage pants, a Queen Anne corsetlet and a steampunk pocket belt (for your map, compass and gadgets). Are you a high end watchmaker/ repair person who has discovered a magic secret in a patron’s watch?  You should probably dress the part in a poet shirt, military frock coat and some round glasses. Are you socialite by day and cat burglar by night? You’ should get used to wearing a corset and skirt but make sure you have your bustle pocket belt to hold your lock picking tools.

You can make just about anything steampunk.  Your only limitation is your imagination. Don’t believe me?  Google Steampunk (insert your favorite superhero, character, person here) cosplay you’ll find tons of pictures to draw inspiration to create your own steampunk character.

Help! I’m an Alternative Bride who doesn’t want a Traditional Dress!

Alternative bride gown

Hey alternative, punk, steampunk, goth and indie brides I’m talking to you.

Wedding dress shopping is hard and dumb.  Trust me, I know. Last October, I got married.  I ended up with a very traditional dress and I hated it.  I still hate it. Other people’s opinions of what I should wear steered me away from what I wanted to wear.  I ended up having a lot of stress over the dress from the moment I spent too much on it to the moment I got married.

Guess what! That doesn’t have to happen to you!  I have some alternative options to the traditional dress as well as a couple of options if you do end up with a traditional dress.alternative bride - bethany

Think outside the Bridal Shop and inside the tickle trunk.  Hear me out, I’m not saying that you should go down to Party City and grab a bagged Harley Quinn costume, stick a veil on your head and call it a day. But you could consider a more romantic or medieval style gown. If you choose to go white you might even be able to appease the elders. You could try this Bethany Gown and still look bridal without wearing a layer cake

alternative bride - purpleSkip white completely.  I look ghostly pale and sickly in white and not in a cool goth way. But I look fantastic in wine (the colour not the beverage).  If I could redo my dress I might go for something like this Juliet Gown instead.

alternative bride - cincherTry separates.  Listen wedding dresses are stupid expensive at bridal shops and you probably won’t be able to wear it again (obviously Venus & Mars gowns are not included in that category). You could wear a white underblouse with a cincher and a princess skirt instead.  You would still have the bridal effect but you would have pieces that you could integrate into your everyday wardrobe.

If you have absolutely no choice in the matter and you end up with a traditional dress there are lots of things you can do to make it your own. I added a velvet cloak to my wedding dress.  I also got a half sleeve tattoo of an owl on my arm. Alternatively, you could add a cincher in your wedding colours over you gown to tone down the traditional look. But if you feel like the powers that be would take issue with cloaks, tattoos and cinchers, you can also wear crazy stompy boots as a compromise.

Listen, I know first hand that it’s hard to stand up to your parents, grandparents, partner, and in-laws when it comes to anything wedding related. It’s easy to say that it’s your day and you’re the only one who matters but it’s so much bigger than that.  You’re merging two families together and you want everyone to be happy.  At the end of the day though it’s about you and your partner coming together and that’s who people want to see. So stand up for what you want and let your dress reflect your personality.

In case you were wondering, I still had a super fun wedding.  In addition to my cloak and tattoo, I also got a second gown to change into after the ceremony. It was a black velvet Queen Anne so everything worked out in the end.
