The universe of Goth can be confusing. There’s so many subgenres. How are you supposed to know what kind of Goth you are? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. You pick your favorite song and we’ll tell you what kind of Goth you are and suggest something to wear. (Don’t take us too seriously, this is just for fun. We won’t call the goth police on you).
Old School Goth – Bauhaus: Bela Lugosi’s Dead
Do you love Bauhaus Bela Lugosi’s Dead? Then you might be an old school goth. You were there from the very beginning with your Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and of course Bauhaus records. Old school goths don’t have the same theatricality of some of the other newer sects of Goths but they still rock all black. They lean more towards the punk aesthetic than the spooky aesthetic. Start your look with a some steampunk bondage pants – in black, of course.
Romantic/ Victorian Goth – Voltaire: When You’re Evil
Does Voltaire When You’re Evil stir your soul? You might be a Romantic/ Victorian Goth! Romantic/ Victorian Goths are tortured souls born into the wrong centuries. They love all things dark, spooky and a little bit macabre. Think of Lydia in Beetlejuice. You can find their collected works of Edgar Allan Poe between their copy of Interview with a Vampire and their DVD of Edward Scissorhands. We suggest a black ruffle poet shirt and a glass of red wine.
Steampunk – Professor Elemental: Fighting Trousers
Are you wearing your Fighting Trousers? You might be steampunk! Some would argue that steampunk isn’t a close relative of Goth. While it made not be a sibling, I think it definitely counts as a cousin. Steampunks love gadgets, science fiction and goggles (to protect their eyes from all the steam powered machinery). Their style is Victorian inspired with a pinch of time travel. Picture the way H.G. Wells would have imagined the future. Don’t forget every good steampunk needs a double breasted waistcoat to house their pocket watch.
We hope we helped you find some new music to listen to or a new style to try out. At the end of the day, you can wear whatever you’d like but sometimes it’s fun dress in a theme. So what kind of goth are you?
