Featured Product: Cloaks

If there are two things I know to be true, it’s that cloaks are awesome and not having a costume makes Halloween kinda shitty.

There’s nothing worse than going to a party where everyone has elaborate super cool costumes and you’re just in a tank top and jeans. When people ask you what you’re supposed to be you either have to admit you don’t have a costume or claim to be a serial killer (because they look like everyone else). On the flip side, there is no better feeling that being out in a crisp autumn evening wrapped up in a cloak with a boozy hot chocolate. If you haven’t figured it out already, cloaks are the solution to not having a costume.

Seriously, if you have no idea what to be just get a cloak. Costume done. Wear all black under your cloak and if people ask what you are you can reply with either witch or warlock. BAM, you’ve just unlocked the Halloween costume achievement. It doesn’t even really matter what colour cloak you wear. You’ll still give off mystical person vibes and for most situations that’s good enough.

You can totally set it up though, if you want to. Try a poet shirt, black pants and boots with a cloak and you’re now a ranger, prince, knight, Aragorn or Robin Hood. It’s that easy. Wear a corset or Queen Anne Corsetlet with a princess skirt or long circle square skirt and you’ve become a princess, Lady Stoneheart, high priestess or lady knight. Want to be a jedi or sith? Start with a cloak. Want to be someone from Assassin’s Creed? Cloak. Elf? Cloak. Vampire? Cloak. Oh and most obviously if you want to be Little Red Riding Hood then you should probably start with a red cloak.

Thus concludes the Halloween installment of why Devon thinks you need a cloak. Do you know what you’re dressing up for Halloween? Let us know in the comments below.

Featured Product: Kilt Pin Skirts

Every once in a while someone will ask me: What is your favourite thing in the store?

How could I begin to answer that? I love cloaks because I feel like they transport me to a fantasy adventure whenever I put one on. I love corsets because I become a sexy femme fatal when I lace one up. And I love kilts because really is there anything sexier than a man in a kilt? How could I possibly choose just one thing as a favourite?

If you rephrase that question and ask what I have gotten the most wear out of then hands down, no contest, the answer is the kilt pin skirt. Seriously, I have half a dozen different colours of kilt pin skirts and I love them so much. You may be wondering how I keep my outfits so fresh and interesting if I just keep buying multiples of the same item. Fear not, I have some suggestions to give your kilt pin skirt some different looks.

kilt pin skirtKilt Pin Skirt + Nerdy Graphic Tee = Match Made in Heaven

My absolutely favourite thing to wear with my kilt pin skirt is a nerdy tee shirt, some stripey tights and doc marten boots. It looks super cute together and lets you show your personality. As an added bonus, your nerdy shirt can act as a filter to decide who you want to talk to. In other words, if you know what “the angels have the phone box” means or why bowties are cool then we’ll probably have lots to talk about.

Kilt Skirt + Corset = Awesome Sexy Power Outfit

If I’m going out somewhere fancy and I want to step up my game then I will go for a kilt pin skirt with a corset. I love the sophistication of the corset with the flirty kilt pin skirt. You can feel sassy and stylish without being too exposed. If you really want to step up your game add some fishnet stockings and a pair of boots!

So if you haven’t tried one of our underbust holster vests then you should get your butt down here and try one on. They are amazing and awesome and you will love it. Do you know what goes great with one? A Kilt Pin Skirt! The kilt pin skirt is basic enough that it will let a cool piece like the underbust holster vest shine. If you want to kick it up add some cool gloves and a choker.

Fresh New Handmade – Gloves!

gloves cover

I’m not really a fussy dresser. Most of the time, I’ll throw on the most comfortable thing I own (in black) and call it a day.  I don’t really wear a lot of accessories except for my wedding ring, my fitbit and my black trim choker if I’m going to work. I love the look of a well put together fully formed outfit but a lot of the time function wins out over fashion. It would get annoying to have to sweep and mop and crawl under things to dust if I had a body chain on. It’s not always practical to grocery shop in a feather bra. But every once in awhile I want to look just a little bit cooler or more badass than I do on a regular day. My go to accessory and solution is gloves!

Like all of the Venus & Mars clothing, the gloves are design by Sanne and balance on the border of fantasy  and rock. All of the gloves are fingerless so you can still do things while you look awesome. I don’t know about you but anytime I’ve worn opera gloves, it’s a pain in the ass to do anything. Got a text? Give yourself 5 minutes to pull off your glove and answer and another 10 minutes to get your glove back on. Need a quick snack? Either figure out how to eat a granola bar without getting crumbs on your gloves or spend another ten to fifteen minutes removing them and putting them back on again. Life is too short to deal with opera gloves. Just get an awesome pair of glovets and call it a day.

wizard glovesMy personal favourite glovets are the black velvet pointe glovets. First of all, they’re black so they’ll go with anything and everything. Second, they’re velvet so you’ll be able to live in luxury when you wear them. Third, the pointe part can be worn on your middle finger for a fancier look or on the thumb or pinky finger for a more punk rock look.  They look equally great with the lace up hoodie as they do with a gown and cloak.

Featured Product: Holsters!

How can you be an urban super hero when you have to worry about where to put your purse? How can you dance like no one’s watching when you have to keep an eye on your backpack? You can’t, plain and simple. We have previously talk about the awesomeness that is the pocket belt but what if you’re just not a pocket belt type of person.  Don’t worry, we have an alternative. Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of holsters.

Holsters, like pocket belts, let you carry your valuables (like snacks) on you as part of your outfit. Except instead of sitting on your hips, you wear a holster more like a vest. We have several different styles available that let you stylishly add pockets to any outfit.

goggles manBlack Cotton Canvas Reversible Holster Vest

Reversible alert! This holster vest can be worn two ways.  That’s right, you get two looks for the price of one. The reversible holster vest is what happens when elf meets steampunk.  The front of the holster vest looks like a vest but the back is lace up.  It is an excellent choice for hot summer months.  On the black canvass side you get two zippered pockets and two patch pockets and on the reverse you get an additional two pockets. That gives you a total of six pockets for all your things. It looks great with a skinny tee and kilt or a tank top and side lace skirt.

Underbust Holster Vest with Detachable Hoodsunderbust holster

Full disclosure, this is my favourite holster.  I remember when Sanne made the sample and I was just like, I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE. This is the ultimate piece of clothing to own if you are a Lord of the Rings fan, a D&D nerd, a Harry Potter fan or you just love fantasy. It’s perfect for festivals or steampunk cosplay. This holster fits under the bust and creates a similar silhouette to a waist cincher without all that pesky boning. There are two deep pockets big enough to hold your phone, wallet and gummy bears. And the best part is there is a giant hood. But wait, that’s not all, the hood is detachable and it comes with an extra piece so you can wear the hood on its own. Awesome! It looks great with corset and kilt pin skirt but it also looks super dapper with a poet shirt and bondage pants.

This is easily our most popular holster and it’s easy to see why. First of all you get the practicality of a reversible holster with two zipper pockets and two patch pockets. But you also get the aesthetic of harness. The pockets sit nicely at your sides while two adjustable straps do up in front. Your phone, keys and wallet will be safe and you will look sexy. I totally have one of these. They’re rad. Try one with a kilt.  That’s it. Nothing else.

Reversible Black Holster

I have two of these. I bought one and my husband liked it so much that I ended up getting one for him too. They are perfect when I am vending at an event.  My husband likes to wear his when he is bartending. There are two zippered pockets on the black canvass side and two patch pockets on the reverse side. From the front it looks like a normal black vest which makes it super easy to integrate into your everyday wardrobe. The back is straps so it keeps you cool if you are working. High five for not over heating. They look great with a skinny tee, actually they look great with everything.

(Bonus) Thigh Holster

Okay so if you don’t want to wear a pocket belt and you’re worried a holster will ruin your outfit then I have just the thing for you.  The Thigh Holster is so discrete that no one will notice you wearing it.  There is just one deep zipper pocket but it’s big enough to hold your phone, some cash or cards and your keys. The sticky elastic allows you wear it on your thigh without it slipping down. You can easily cover it with a dress, kilt or skirt. As an added bonus you will feel totally badass and sexy whenever you have to hike up with your dress to pay for something.

Problem: It’s Hot. Solution: KILTS

kilts cover picture

Problem: Summer is here and it’s hot.  Solution: KILTS.

Seriously, kilts are amazing. They look great with everything, they’re super manly (and sexy) and when there’s a breeze they’re your own personal air conditioner. Luckily for you we have a variety of styles and colours of kilts.  Bonus they’re designed by Sanne and made right here in Vancouver.  What more could you ask for? Still need convincing?  Here are my top three reasons why kilts are the BEST.Fab Festival Kilt Outift

KILTS are manlier/ sexier than motor oil and beards.  Just ask the Spartans and the Scots. I mean think about it. Chances are the last man you saw in a kilt was either decked out in traditional gear (hot!) or he was a bearded man with 20 hole boots and lots of tattoos (hotter!). It takes a certain amount of confidence to go against social norms. When you see a guy in a kilt you know that he is secure with himself.  What could be sexier than that?

KILTS keep you cooler than shorts. If you live in Vancouver you’ve been enjoying this sunny weather since mid May.  And you know that it will only get hotter as the summer progresses. Shorts are great and all but kilts have the advantage. All you need is a little breeze and then BOOM you have your own personal AC on your lower half.

KILTS go with everything.  Got a wedding? Wear a kilt. Going to a festival? Kilt. Gotta grab some groceries? Kilt. Kilts look great with a t-shirt and a pair of converse runners for a casual look.  Wear a plaid shirt and hiking boots with your kilt if you’re camping.  If you have a formal affair try a kilt with a poet shirt, vest and some boots.  Kilts are super handy for fetish events. Just add a skinny tee and guy liner and you’re ready to go.

Well there you have it.  If you’re still not convinced that Kilts are amazing then you have no choice but to head down to the store and try a couple on.
