What is Fan Expo?
Fan Expo is the place to be if you’re a fan of anything pop culture. Whether you love movies, cosplay, books, comics or toys Fan Expo is the event for you! There are vendors with everything your geeky little heart could desire. The artists alley is to die for. And there’s celebrities! Are you a Star Trek fan? George Takei will be there. How about Star Wars? Then you better go say hi to Billy Dee Williams. Princess Bride? Cary Elwes and Wallace Shawn will sign your DVD. Love Gotham? David Mazouz and Sean Pertwee will be there. And if you ever grew up watching Baywatch, you’d better get a pass to come say hi to Pamela Anderson. This is our seventh year vending at the Fan Expo. It’s one of our favourite events to do and we are so excited to come back in 2019.
When/ Where is Fan Expo?
Vancouver Fan Expo will take place at the Vancouver Convention Center. It will take place Friday March 1st from 4pm to 9pm, Saturday March 2nd from 10am to 7pm and Sunday March 3rd from 10am to 5pm. Tickets start at $30 for a one day pass and go up to $229 for a three day VIP pass online. At the door only single day and family passes will be available and only while supplies last.
Should you go?
Fan Expo is for you if you belong to pretty much any fandom. I guarantee that you’ll meet someone who shares your passion. Have you ever wanted to make a cosplay? Fan Expo is a great place to try it out. You get to be inspired by people who have been cosplaying for years and share the joy of your fandom with people you are just starting out. You’ll probably pick up some tricks of the trade while you’re there. If you don’t want to dress up that’s cool too! You’ll see lots of people in casual attire just enjoying the atmosphere. You should come check it out!
What is Cosplay?
Fan Expo is three sleeps away! I’m so excited to see all the amazing and creative cosplay. In honour of Fan Expo, I thought I’d re-post I blog I wrote explaining what cosplay is for those who are not initiated! Enjoy and don’t forget to drop by and say hello to us this weekend!
Cosplay is actually a portmanteau of two words: costume and play. Originally, I think that the word specifically applied to anime culture where people would dress up as their favourite anime characters. As time has gone by, it has expanded to include pretty much any pop culture icon. Some people are purists and get every detail perfect right down to the colour of the thread on the switching. Some people mash up differently cultural elements to create a new version of a character like making a steampunk sailor moon or a little mermaid princess Leia. Lots of people make gender bending version of their favourite characters like a male Harley Quinn or a female Captain America. The options are limitless and the community is super accepting.
If you are still not sure you understand, fear not! I have some examples of awesome Venus & Mars versions of some of our most favourite fictional badass ladies.
Wonder Woman is one of my personal favourite super heroes so naturally we had to include her. It’s so empowering to have a strong, fearless female hero kicking ass and taking names. Who wouldn’t want to dress up like that? For Wonder Woman we combined the iconic Linda Carter look with some of the badassery of the new Gal Gadot look. We put together a gold Venus & Mars bandeau with a red reversible VM waist cincher some blue booty shorts, a black velvet cloak and gold pointe glovettes. Suffering Sappho, I have never seen a cooler Wonder Woman!
If you have ever been to a convention you know that if we had to include anything it was Harley Quinn. There has been so many Harley looks over years and we couldn’t pick just one. We used her original black and red for inspiration but gave the overall outfit more of a roller derby feel. For this outfit, we combined a sleeveless red skinny tee, the reverse side of the reversible red waist cincher, black and red tap shorts and mix and matched a pair of red and black fishnet glovettes. We also added a pair of black goggles as a nod to the original Harley Quinn’s black eye mask. Trust me, puddin’, everyone will love this Harley look.
We love Carrie Fisher. Her real life sassy no bullshit approach to Hollywood is something we can all aspire to. We absolutely had to pay homage to her with a Princess Leia inspired look. I know slave Leia is super popular but we wanted to show off the all white princess outfit instead. We put together a white under blouse, white reversible waist cincher and cream panne cloak. And we used a white pinstripe tube top as the skirt. To really sell the look we put Ivette’s hair into buns. I sense great awesome in this outfit. (PS. I love this picture so much. I think it’s one of my favourites ever.)
So what did you think of my definition of cosplay? did I get it right? Would you explain it differently? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Happy Novemberween Everyone!
We hope you had a safe and happy Halloween and that your day was filled with more treats than tricks. We have been busy in the shop restocking all the things that sold out over October and making all kinds of new things too! Here’s what we’ve been up to so far:
Fan Expo Prep
I can’t believe it but Fan Expo is less than a week away! We are so excited to be vending for our fifth (or is it sixth?) year in a row! This year we will have a double booth to accommodate all the awesome stuff we’re bring. What kind of awesome stuff? Well how about contacts, goggles, cloaks, kilts and corset? Just to name a few. We’re desperately busy trying to make sure that we have all your favourite things in stock in time. Don’t worry, if you need to pick up a couple things before the show, we are open seven days a week.
Faux Fur Everything
Brr… it’s freezing. November has aggressively burst through the door with cold weather and snow! Do not worry, we have been building up an arsenal of faux fur accessories to keep you toasty warm and looking badass. We have faux fur suspenders, cloaks and holsters in store with faux fur hoods on the way. What more could you ask for in this weather?
Cocktail Dresses for Christmas Parties
I know it’s a little early for Christmas carols and decorations but a lot of offices start their Christmas parties around this time of year. Why go in the same little black dress that everyone else is wearing when you could take the opportunity to stand out and show everyone your style? We have some super cute vintage inspired dresses, some sexy goth (but not too goth) dresses and much more in store as well as some new styles on the same. It’s definitely worth coming to check out.
New Sale Stuff!
So in order to make room for all the new things that are coming we have to make some space. Our World Famous Last Chance for Love Sale Rack has just been updated with bondage pants, kilts, corsets, crinolines and much more. There are some gems in there so you should come check it out before it’s all gone.
