Did you know that, in addition to making everything with the Venus & Mars label, we carry treasures made by local artists? It’s true! If you’ve ever come in the shop, you have probably marveled at the feather bras or skeleton necklaces or leather masks. We thought it was about time to shine the light on some of our favourite artists!
Everyone loves the feathers in the store. House of Slaughter crafts beautiful and sexy handmade feather bras and wraps. She also makes the light up bras and feather wraps. Transform yourself by adding a feather wrap to a corset into an evil queen. Add a light up bra to a side lace skirt and pocket belt for the ultimate festival look.
Caridwen creates stunning resin cameo necklaces, chokers and earrings. Embrace your darkness with one of her Victorian Skeleton Lady cameos. Bring out your playful side with a kitty cat cameo. Be a pirate queen with a classic skull and crossbones cameo. All of Caridwen’s jewelry is perfect for steampunk cosplay. Add one of her lace chokers to a peasant blouse, waist cincher and circle square skirt.
Regardless of what you’re into, you probably need a good leather mask in your tickle trunk. KWest creates fabulous hard leather masks that are formed to your face. They are perfect for cosplay, fetish, and masquerades. Want to cosplay as steampunk catwoman? KWest has the perfect mask for that! Try his black catwoman mask with a black corset, black velvet capris, boots and a black pocket belt. Whip is optional.

The morning is grey. There is a light drizzle that seems like the sky can’t decide whether it wants to explode in a rainstorm or lighten up to a sunny day. Everyone walks with the heads down, umbrellas up and black jackets zipped up. Today feels like an angsty teenager. It’s not bad and it’s not good. It’s just apathetic and meh. Suddenly there she is, a colourful rainbow. The Lolita girl steps out of the coffee shop like a beautiful pink cupcake in her lovely, pastel dress with a crinoline full of layers and layers of soft tulle. Somehow the day doesn’t seem as grey and the world feels less indifferent. Little rays of sunshine start to break through the clouds.
Some people call Vancouver the no fun city. Those people don’t own a crinoline. The truth is that you make your own fun and any event or situation can be an adventure. That mindset comes from within but sometimes when your dishes are piling up and you need to do groceries and you lost your bus pass it’s hard to not to think negatively. A little outside help might be exactly what you need. It is next to impossible to feel crappy when you’re wearing a crinoline. Seriously, try grocery shopping with a friend in crinolines, you’ll have a blast.
You might be thinking that a crinoline is more of an under garment; just a thing to make your skirts fuller. You would be wrong. Crinolines make excellent skirts and add sass to any outfit. If you’re worried about them being see-through add a cute pair of ruffle shorts or leggings underneath. One of my favourite looks is a crinoline with a nerdy t-shirt, some leggings and converse runners. You get bonus points if you wear your hair in a side pony tail. If you’re feeling a little bit fancier try a crinoline with a corset and sleeves and become a fairy princess instantly. How can you feel blue when you’re a fairy princess? And of course there is always the vintage pinup classic look of wearing a crinoline under a full skirted 50’s inspired dress.
